Marcus Johnson Calls for Bold Inclusion in Disability Community

March 1, 2025

In the March issue of Able News, Marcus Johnson delivers a sharp and urgent call for deeper commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the disability community. His piece, “Honoring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Disability Community: A Call to Action,” weaves together personal truth and national data to expose an uncomfortable reality: marginalized voices within the disability community are still not fully recognized or protected.

“These are not isolated incidents,” Johnson writes, referencing the over 1,600 people with disabilities murdered by caregivers or relatives over the past 40 years. “They are the result of explicit, widespread ableism that has often been perpetuated with little to no consequence.”

Johnson warns of a rising backlash against DEI and reminds readers that people with disabilities are not “broken” or “fixed”—they are whole people deserving of full participation in society. “Representation matters. It is not a slogan, but a call to action,” he states.
