H+H helping women with disabilities access care

July 16, 2019

A major renovation at a clinic run by NYC Health + Hospitals has made it possible for women with physical disabilities to access equipment used for tests such as mammographies.

H+H’s Gotham Health clinic in the Morrisania section of the Bronx opened Monday following about $850,000 in renovations that modified a mammography machine and exam rooms to allow access to women who use a wheelchair, added a movable exam table and installed a patient lift.

The city health system said women with disabilities die from breast cancer at a greater rate than those without because they are less likely to get screenings and treatment.

The work was funded by the City Council and completed in collaboration with Independence Care System, a nonprofit that specializes in care for people with physical disabilities.

The health system said the project would increase the capacity of the clinic by 10% and increase the number of procedures that can be performed.
“The newly renovated radiology center demonstrates our commitment to provide access to care for all, with a clear focus upon people with disabilities,” Michelle Lewis, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health CEO, said in a statement. —J.L.
